چکیده

We explore the effects of ultrafast shaped pulses for two-level systems that do not have a single photon resonance by developing a multiphoton densitymatrix approach. We take advantage of the fact that the dynamics of the intermediate virtual states are absent within our laser pulse timescales. Under these conditions, the multiphoton results are similar to the single photon and that it is possible to extend the single photon coherent control ideas to develop multiphoton coherent control. Systematic control of nonlinear optical processes using optimally shaped femtosecond pulses.

This article reviews experimental efforts to control multiphoton transitions using shaped femtosecond laser pulses, and it lays out the systematic study being followed by us for elucidating the effect of phase on nonlinear optical laser-molecule interactions. Starting with a brief review of nonlinear optics and how nonlinear optical processes depend on the electric field inducing them, a number...

Spatio-temporal coherent control of atomic systems

Coherent control of resonant and non-resonant two-photon absorption processes was examined using a spatio-temporal pulse-shaping technique. By utilizing a combination of temporal focusing and femtosecond pulse-shaping techniques, we spatially control multiphoton absorption processes in a completely deterministic manner. Distinctive symmetry properties emerge through two-dimensional mapping of s...

Theory of ultrafast nonresonant multiphoton transitions in polyatomic molecules: basics and application to optimal control theory.

A systematic approach is presented to describe nonresonant multiphoton transitions, i.e., transitions between two electronic states without the presence of additional intermediate states resonant with the single-photon energy. The method is well suited to describe femtosecond spectroscopic experiments and, in particular, attempts to achieve laser pulse control of molecular dynamics. The obtaine...

Pulse Function for Control of the Coherent Excitation in Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy

A selective excitation of closely spaced Raman transitions using femtosecond pulse shaping is studied within a semiclassical approach. An analytical pulse function is proposed having duration T that selectively excites one of two transitions separated by a frequency interval less than 1/T. It is shown that, for intense fields, both the field amplitude and pulse frequency spectrum have to be car...

Coherent Control of Bond Making.

We demonstrate coherent control of bond making, a milestone on the way to coherent control of photoinduced bimolecular chemical reactions. In strong-field multiphoton femtosecond photoassociation experiments, we find the yield of detected magnesium dimer molecules to be enhanced for positively chirped pulses and suppressed for negatively chirped pulses. Our ab initio model shows that control is...
